Welcome to the Orkney International Island Games (12th -18th July)
Dear Visitor
Your stay during the Orkney International Island Games (12th -18th July).
First of all, apologies to those of you who contacted us as far back as 2024 regarding berthing during the games. We are very proud Orkney has been able to host such a prestigious event however for Orkney Marinas it lands at the peak of our busiest period. So, I think it’s important to point out that we would appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this time.
We have a new team in place now, led by Andy Mason, with the assistance of seasonal staff in our three locations.
Stromness and Westray will be operating pretty much as normal but we expect Stromness to be busy and there is limited space to raft up yachts like we can do in Kirkwall. To try and provide greater capacity in Kirkwall we are making the following temporary arrangements:
1. Some of our local berth holders will be moving into the inner harbour basin providing approximately 9 additional 10m berths able to be used by yachts up to 12m.
2. Orkney Harbours have kindly organised 6 visitor moorings which will be outside the marina on the east side of Kirkwall Bay. These will take vessels up to 20 tonnes. Great care must be taken for vessels using tenders to travel in and out of the marina. We will accommodate tenders where we can around the fuel berth area and our toilets and showers are accessible. We will be charging £20 per night for these moorings payable at the marina kiosk or office.
3. We will be asking Yachts moored alongside our concrete pontoons to raft up so please be willing to take someone alongside. You will need plenty fenders, long and short ropes to facilitate this type of berthing. Please be considerate to your neighbours and take great care stepping from one boat to another.
4. As a last resort we may have to put some vessels on the east side of the pier but space is limited with ferries etc. so cannot be guaranteed. Fender boards will be essential in this situation.
Normal Marina charges will apply and if you require fuel please arrange with staff on arrival.
We hope you have an enjoyable visit and the weather is kind to us. A fleet of 20-22 ILCA’s will be sailing each day in the Island Games competition, and we wish our fellow sailors’ success.
Kind regards
Brian D Kynoch
